Onaga Fire Department and CHCS Conduct Joint Fire Training at Onaga Hospital

The Onaga Fire Department, in collaboration with staff from Community HealthCare System (CHCS), conducted a joint fire response training the evening of Monday, October 27, at the Onaga Community Hospital. The exercise focused on enhancing emergency preparedness and coordination during potential fire events within the facility.

The training was designed to address one of the greatest challenges in emergency response—familiarity with the physical layout of the hospital and how to quickly and safely gain access after-hours. Rather than conducting a traditional tour, participants engaged in a realistic, scenario-based drill. Firefighters practiced entering the facility, securing proper access badges, interpreting building floor plans, and locating a designated “fire” area, marked by cones for the exercise.

“This type of hands-on training is invaluable,” said John Fitzthum, CEO of Community HealthCare System. “It strengthens collaboration between our teams, ensures faster, more effective responses in the event of a real emergency, and ultimately helps protect our patients, staff, and community.”

Both CHCS and the Onaga Fire Department viewed the event as a success, with plans underway for future trainings that will incorporate more complex scenarios to further improve coordination and response times.

“We are grateful for the Onaga Fire Department’s partnership and commitment to safety,” Fitzthum added. “Their dedication and proactive approach make a real difference in keeping our hospital and community safe.”
