Dr. Tom Walsh holds an undergraduate degree from Notre Dame University and a medical degree from the University of Kansas. He completed his residency at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. His clinical interest is family medicine. “I’m the definition of boring,” Dr. Walsh says, because he has had the same wife, Marcia, and the same job for more than 44 years. “I have been very blessed,” he says. Dr. Walsh and Marcia have three children, two daughters-in-law, a son-in-law, and eight grandchildren. Dr. Walsh grew up in a healthcare family. His father was a physician, and he and his brother used to accompany their father on house calls two or three nights a week. “I knew what I was getting into,” Dr. Walsh says. Dr. Walsh loves getting to know patients as people rather than just as medical conditions. “My patients are neighbors, friends, colleagues, and co-workers,” he says. He also enjoys following Notre Dame sports – including fencing, hockey, basketball, and football – and attending the activities of his eight grandchildren. -

Dr. Marcus Weiser graduated from Bethany College with a bachelor’s degree in biology and from medical school at Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. He completed his residency at Via Christi (St. Joseph and St. Francis) in Wichita and served as chief resident. Dr. Weiser is board-certified in family medicine. He is also trained to do obstetrics and performs EGDs (esophagogastroduodenoscopy), colonoscopies, and C-sections. He particularly enjoys teaching both third- and fourth-year medical students as a clinical assistant professor in the University of Kansas Medical Center Department of Family Medicine and as a clerkship preceptor for the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. Dr. Weiser enjoys caring for others in a variety of settings. “I love family medicine, and it is a privilege to serve others as a family medicine physician. I find the variety that rural family medicine offers both challenging and rewarding,” he says. Dr. Weiser was born and raised in northwest Kansas and lives in Onaga with his wife and five children. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family, helping coach his kids’ sports teams, and, occasionally, golfing. He also likes basketball, hunting, fishing, shooting, and grilling or smoking meats. -

Dr. Nancy Zidek graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor of arts in microbiology and holds a degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. She completed her residency at Wesley Family Practice in Wichita, Kansas. She is particularly interested in women’s health and performs colposcopies and places birth control implants and intrauterine devices, or IUDs. Dr. Zidek is a lifelong Kansas resident and a second-generation doctor. Her father practiced for more than 40 years in Marysville, Kansas, and she knew from a young age that she wanted to join the same profession. She enjoys “being part of the family” and watching her young patients grow and mature into adults. Dr. Zidek is married and has two almost-grown kids. Her daughter, Bethany, is married and in medical school, and her son, Elijah, attends Kansas State University. Dr. Zidek and her husband live in Onaga and have two “spoiled mutts.” They also feed hummingbirds in the summer and have up to 10 “hummers” who visit their feeders. -

Married to his lovely wife Cindy since 1983, Dr. Bruce Carroll graduated from Southwestern Medical School in Dallas in 1987. He has been in practice in St Marys since 1990. He and his wife have four children and seven grandchildren (and counting!). Dr. Carrol enjoys the full spectrum of family medicine in a small town and has enjoyed knowing and taking care of multiple generations of many, many families over the past 30 years. He delivered just under 1,000 babies before retiring from that duty in 2012. When not in the clinic, he can often be found at CrossFit Benedictus, where he is a Level 2 coach; he also enjoys cycling as part of his fitness program. Not surprisingly, sports medicine and lifestyle medicine are parts of family medicine that have special appeal to Dr Carroll. He puts fitness into practical application with his first real passion: hiking and climbing, especially in Colorado. -

Dr. David Cancelada attended the nation’s military medical school at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in Bethesda, Maryland. He completed his surgical training at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. He is board-certified in both general surgery and surgical critical care. He has 25 years of experience in the U.S. Army, which included assignments in numerous military medical facilities to include the U.S. Army Burn Unit, multiple deployments to Iraq as commander of a forward surgical team, as well as Honduras and Haiti in support of the 2010 earthquake disaster. Military decorations include the Bronze Star and the Legion of Merit. He and his family moved to Kansas in 2006 when he was transferred to Fort Riley, and since leaving the military in 2010, Dr. Cancelada has continued to serve the people of Kansas as a general surgeon. Dr. Cancelada’s professional memberships include Fellowship in the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST), and the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). His interests include trauma/critical care, bariatric and anti-reflux surgery, cancer (breast, colon), and thyroid surgery. Hospital memberships include Community HealthCare System and Stormont-Vail Medical Center (SVMC), where Dr. Cancelada is an active member of their Level 2 trauma service as well as Course Director for their Advance Trauma Life Support (ATLS) training program. Dr. Cancelada is also an assistant professor of surgery at USUHS. -

Ridder comes from a family of nurses and healthcare providers. His mother and her four sisters are nurses, and he has a brother and a sister who are also nurses. “Medicine is a profession that allows me to continually learn and grow,” Ridder says. He loves getting to know his patients and serving the community of St. Marys. He wants patients to know that the best way to take care of your family is to take care of yourself by eating healthy foods, getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, and avoiding drugs and alcohol. He also recommends managing stress and getting regular medical checkups. Ridder traveled extensively as a civilian and with the military--he retired as a Navy Captain in June 2019, served as an ICU nurse in the Army, and served in the Army Reserve for 10 years--but his roots are in Kansas. He lives in Augusta with his two teenage sons and one daughter and enjoys spending time with them. -

She has worked nights in the emergency department at Onaga since relocating here nearly three years ago. McKinsey is married to an Onaga native, and they made the decision to try small-town living at the time when their two youngest children were starting school and the oldest was off to college. They have found living, working, raising children, and enjoying life in a community where people truly care about their friends and neighbors to be a singularly wonderful experience. McKinsey feels blessed to have the opportunity to serve those in her community and neighboring communities alongside a remarkable healthcare team. Rezac is certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Before coming to Onaga, Rezac worked for 20 years in an intensive care unit and in a pulmonary-critical care practice in Topeka. She is interested in all aspects of preventive/wellness care as well as in pulmonary care (including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD; asthma; and sleep apnea). Rezac also cares for patients who are experiencing strokes and helped develop the acute stroke program here at Community HealthCare System. Rezac loves caring for people throughout the lifespan and helping people stay healthy and live better-quality lives. “There is something about being a part of people’s lives during the best and worst of times. You just don’t get to do that with most jobs,” she says. She encourages everyone to get an annual wellness exam. “They are not painful and can be very helpful in identifying or preventing potential health issues, plus it’s an excellent opportunity to discuss patients’ concerns,” Rezac says. Rezac was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin and is a big Packers fan. When not at work, she loves spending time with her family and close friends. She likes to travel with her husband, Lance, and go snow skiing and hiking in Montana. She lives south of Onaga and has three grown children. -

She also holds a master’s degree in nursing science from Washburn University. Campbell completed a clinical internship at Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria and the International Exchange Scholarship Program in Midwifery at King Faisal Hospital in Khamis Mushayt, Saudi Arabia. She is board-certified as a family nurse practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and holds both RN and APRN certifications from the Kansas State Board of Nursing. She speaks fluent Afrikaans. Campbell is particularly interested in family-centered primary care, women’s health care through the lifespan, and chronic disease management. Growing up, Campbell always knew she wanted to be a primary healthcare provider. “I particularly enjoyed helping my grandmother in her informal walk-in clinic on their farm in the Northwest province of South Africa. Grandma was a retired Community Health Nurse who could never really retire. When patients, friends, and farm-hands could not get to her little clinic, she went to see them wherever they were. For me, this cultured a special love for rural primary care and a commitment to improve the health of people within their living situation, within their community, and using the resources and opportunities within their reach,” she says. She also appreciates the opportunities she has had to practice in different parts of the world. “These experiences continue to inspire me to always regard individuals as part of their unique culture or community and care for them within that context,” Campbell says. Campbell enjoys teaching clients how to care for their mind, body, and soul and helping them celebrate even small victories toward better health. She says there are no “magic pills” to fix health problems effortlessly and encourages patients to do the hard work of maintaining and improving health. When not at work, Campbell enjoys flower gardening, traditional karate, walking her three rescued Bassett hounds, and traveling. She loves to visit her family in South Africa and support band, arts, and culture in our schools. She lives in Holton with her husband and two teenage children. -

Amy Louise Jones, MSN, APRN-C, FNP studied pre-nursing at Kansas State University then completed a bachelor of science degree in nursing at Washburn University. After working as a registered nurse for 12 years, she obtained a master of science in nursing from Wichita State University. Jones is certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and enjoys working with patients of all ages, but she is particularly fond of the elderly. She loves to help solve dermatological problems, provide women’s healthcare for all ages, help manage diabetes and high blood pressure, and provide foot care. Jones says she has made many home visits to patients over the years. Jones was born in Kansas and started working as a certified nursing assistant, or CNA, at age 16 in a nursing home. She says she loves practicing medicine because it is “never boring and never a waste of time.” Jones has been married to her husband, Barry, for more than 30 years. They live on a farm near Frankfort, and they have three grown children and two grandchildren. When not at work, Jones enjoys her “farm wife duties,” cooking, playing with her grandchildren, and taking long country walks with her Airedale Terrier, Archie. -

Michele Reisinger, DNP, APRN, and FNP-BC, is a rural Kansas native who has established a longstanding clinical practice of more than 20 years as a family nurse practitioner in her hometown of Onaga. She holds a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Washburn University and master of science in nursing plus doctor of nursing practice degrees from the University of Kansas. Reisinger serves on several local community and faith-based committees supporting her rural community. She is active in regional organizations including Big Lakes Developmental Center Quality Review Committee, Kansas Department of Health and Environment – Healthcare-Associated Infections & Antimicrobial Resistance Advisory Group, and numerous doctoral committees involving the education of nurse practitioners. Professional affiliations include American Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau nursing honorary, and Phi Kappa Phi academic honorary. In addition to her clinic practice, Reisinger is full-time graduate-level nursing faculty at Washburn University School of Nursing and the Primary Investigator on a Health Resources & Services Administration-funded grant focused on the education and preparation of rural nurse practitioners for practice in medically underserved communities. She is a prior fellow for the Kansas Council on Developmental Disabilities and was named a Rural Health Fellow by the National Rural Health Association. Reisinger’s clinical interests include preventive health/wellness, chronic disease management, and children with developmental exceptionalities. Michele has advanced training in wound, ostomy, and continence care and performs consultative services in these areas. She sees clients across the lifespan at CHCS clinics in Onaga and Corning. -

Nicole Huey, MSN, APRN, FNP-C, holds bachelor of science degrees in agricultural economics and French from Kansas State University and also studied agricultural economics and marketing at Ecole Superieure D’Agriculture de Purpan in Toulouse, France. “I was working in another field with people I enjoyed, but I wasn’t making a difference in their lives. I decided, with the support of my husband and family, to start over and follow my dream,” she says. Huey pursued a bachelor of science in nursing from Baker University and a master of science in nursing from the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville. She is certified by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. Huey is particularly interested in cardiology, and she loves to take care of people. “I try to find ways to make patients’ lives better so they can live every day to the fullest,” she says. She wants patients to know that self-care matters. “Take time every day for yourself and your wellness. You only get one body, one lifetime, so make it count.” Huey is originally from Kansas City and lives in Topeka with her husband and two children. She has been a competitive gymnast and coach, and she and her husband met on the K-State Waterski team. They are still competitive water-skiers and enjoy traveling to competitions and water skiing, snow skiing, and participating in other sports as a family. Huey and family also have two Boston Terriers, one Rhodesian Ridgeback, and one cat. -

Jana Kramer, PA-C, was raised on a farm in northwest Kansas and moved to the Seneca area 20 years ago with her husband, Joe. She joined the staff at Community Hospital Onaga in 2001 and has enjoyed building relationships and taking care of patients at the many locations within Community HealthCare System. She received her bachelor of science degree from Kansas State University and completed her physician assistant degree at Wichita State University, where she graduated summa cum laude. She is board-certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Kansas Academy of Physician Assistant organizations. She maintains certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support. Working as a physician assistant in family medicine has been a rewarding experience for Kramer. She loves working with patients of all ages and helping them establish and meet wellness and healthcare goals. She aims to provide the best care to meet patients’ medical needs. Kramer enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing the piano, going to movies, and attending sporting events. She has also enjoyed teaching piano students, volunteering for the church and school, and being a wish granter for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Jeremy Brandt, PA-C, studied at Kansas State University and then completed the physician assistant program at St. Louis University. He also holds a master’s degree in physician assistant studies through the University of Nebraska Omaha and is a licensed X-ray technologist, which enables the Frankfort Clinic, where he is the lead provider, to offer basic radiologic services. Brandt has served in the armed forces for more than 20 years and continues to serve as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Kansas Air National Guard 190th Air Refueling Wing, Forbes Field, Topeka, KS. “I had the fortune to deploy to Iraq and serve with extraordinarily high-quality men and women in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004 with the 2-130 Field Artillery Battalion headquartered in Hiawatha, KS,” Jeremy says. He also serves as co-clinical advisor for the Northeast Kansas Healthcare Coalition, which benefits from his emergency preparedness experience. Brandt loves family medicine and covering the emergency room. He grew up around healthcare and science; his mother was a nurse and long-term care administrator, and his father was a high school science teacher then came to Frankfort schools to serve as principal. He loves helping people and says he felt that “as a PA, I would be positioned to return to the communities that helped shape me and the values that I hold today.” He feels blessed and honored to care for friends and neighbors and humbled by their confidence and trust. Brandt lives in Frankfort with his wife, who is originally from Axtell, Kansas. They have four children ranging from teens to adult. The oldest is married to a wonderful young lady. He is dedicated to fitness and is “a bit of a handyman.” He and his family have three large dogs, a cat, and “numerous other animals from time to time.” -

She maintains board certification with the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and is also certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support, and Neonatal Resuscitation. Surdez’s areas of clinical interest include women’s health, including contraception counseling; reproductive health; prenatal care; lactation support; and preventive care. Surdez enjoys helping others when they need it most, creating relationships, and watching families grow. When asked for advice to share with patients, she says, “We all take our health for granted. Sometimes it takes work to better yourself. Do it! You’ll never regret investing in your health.” Surdez was born and raised in Frankfort, Kansas, and lives there with her husband, Derek, plus their two sons, Bowen and Blake, and their daughter, Wren. Surdez does not like chocolate but does enjoy spending time with family and friends, creating memories with her children, playing volleyball, and membership in the Teams of Our Lady (TOOL) church group.
